III. CONSIDERATION OF REQUESTS

A. Consideration of request by Shawnee Family Board of Directors YMCA that the name of the street running from Kickapoo to Airport Road currently “Saratoga” be changed to “YMCA Drive”.

Discussion: Casey Bell spoke on behalf of the YMCA board and suggested that due to the community support and the YMCA being a community showplace and focal point that to honor and respect the community effort and highlight the YMCA facility that the community should be proud to rename the street. He also gave a brief description of the history behind the current name of the street.

Don Lynch, Shawnee and Pott County Emergency Management, agrees to all this but stated that the financial and logistical ramifications require an extensive amount of labor and materials on the parts of the City, Pott County Emerg. Mngmt, Municipal Authority, police and fire departments, GPS databases, utility services and post offices to name a few.

All commissioners voiced opinions on the subject, including Ardrey saying that other street names had been changed and that the veterans did not show up to oppose. Johnson agreed that renaming of the street would create too many logistical problems and felt that it might diminish respect for veterans. Taffe felt as though there was not enough information in the YMCA’s request letter regarding the formal opinions of other merchants on the street to make an informed decision.

Motion was made by Ardrey, seconded by Harris to table a decision until a formal opinion from the National Guard could be obtained. Motion denied.

Aye: Ardrey, Harris
